Left them partying

Off day from the garden today. We went to the beach as it was a fine sunny day after only a few hours of sun this raining week. So we entrusted the garden today to our unofficial pet birds. When the kids were safely fasten on their chair in the car saw these birds trying to open one of the box that contain sunflower seeds under the shed. They have been very naughty lately in the garden.
Bees take their role seriously as pollinators. They are doing a fine job. More bees partying around the garden these days. We don't have to worry about manual pollination, less work in the garden now. The only thing that we worry is who gets to the female flower of vegetables that we plan to save seed from, us or the bees.
Yellow colour flowers received a lot of admires this week.
I feel much happy this summer because there were many kind of insects visiting our garden compared to last year. A few variety of moth and butterflies came to visit us ( I was getting bored looking at white cabbage butterfly dancing in front of me). Not worry about caterpillars at the moment as not growing that many leafy vegetables. It will be a different story starting April when winter vegetable are ready to be transplant since most of them are brassicas. I have been learning to add some herb or flowers in the veggie patch to attract beneficial insects to the garden but not reducing our space to plant more vegetables or yield. Found this caterpillar having a great time on tomato plant, I wonder what kind of butterfly will it transform.

Found this larvae on a different tomato plant. Anyone know what it is? Good or bad sign? The image is not that good, I can't get a good focus.

Did you garden this weekend?

  2. All these critters are signs of a healthy garden but I'm afraid you'll have to share your harvest with them. The water you have photographed in the first picture looks very clean and crystal clear.

  3. Yes I did. I harvested brassicas(komatuna) and pak choi this weekend.
I have 2 more patches for brassicas so I have to get prepared for warding off cabbages butterflies and some uninvited bugs as spring is coming.

  4. Your photos are very interesting today; shells, birds, flowers and bugs.

Good or bad sign? Good! It's either good for the plants or good for the birds. It can't go wrong. :)

  18. So many beautiful pictures! Glad you got a day off :) I had a big gardening spree this weekend, moving plants (hopefully they survive the uprooting) and pruning brnaches so I can get more light on the garden, and a general long-overdue tidy-up. Hoping to sow seeds next weekend, but never know, my gardening schedule always knocked around by other priorities. Sigh.

  23. I found a cluster of bugs just like that on one of my plants last season http://tastytravels-holly.blogspot.com/2010/09/wildlife-wednesday-92210.html

I was hoping they were ladybugs and not something sinister! On the upside, I've noticed a lot of ladybugs in my yard, house and deck this year. Must've been what they were!

  26. Love your photos.. (It's still cold here in my part of the world.) I have no idea what the cluster of bugs are in the last photo, but I would guess your caterpillar will turn into a "sphinx", "hawk", or "hummingbird" moth.

  27. I love all the garden happenings!! looking forward to seeing little tomatoes on my plants too - right now they're just a couple of cotyledons!

  28. i read on the web that says tomato leaves and stalks are poisonous, thus pretty much why no insects are attracted to it. looks like this caterpillar is one hardy exception. :). the larvae looks really disgusting. hope it won't spread to your other plants.
