I cried a bucket of tears a few days ago but I got a basket full of harvest on Sunday. Our kebun (vegetable garden) gifted us with chilies, leeks, okras, white spine cucumbers, angled luffa, Purple King and snake beans. We also had a bowl of Da Cheong Chae babies that have already grown about 10cm tall from thinnings.
Any idea what dish did I decide to make with serai (lemon grass), daun kesum (laksa leaf/vietnamese mint and these ingredient? This is actually the first time, we tasted our home-grown Okra Burgundy. We have been freezing okra harvest since the first pod."Snapper masak Assam Pedas" which literally translate as Snapper cook in spicy sour soup? This is a very popular dish in south of Malaysia peninsular. It is sour due to one of the base ingredient which is tamarind juice. The most common type of fish that is used for this dish is actually sting-ray. I remember there was a time when we were travelling south and mom got hooked with this dish. Those eggplant were overcooked by me but they still taste good. Boosted my appetite, ate with very warm rice.
Stir-fried angled luffa with anchovies which Lenay cooked for dinner today as I stayed late at school. It was delicious so sweet and soft to eat.

ReplyDeleteAsam pedas tu nampak sedap campur dengan terung lagi best! I love to put lots of terung or bendir. Hope my petola will start to flower soon, cant wait to see the fruits dangling on the plant and cook them like Lenay's.

ReplyDeleteOkay, I think I just drooled on myself looking at the snapper dish. Looks so yummy! I've never had luffa before. I've used lemongrass in soups and a curry dish before. Good luck using up your bounty!

ReplyDeleteYour brinjal is so kilat i can even see your shadow on it haha. Do you prefer long or round brinjal? I think long ones taste better?? Don't know, haven't tried the round one so far!

ReplyDeleteThe harvest is just nice to make the Snapper Asam Pedas. I like this dish. Bunga kantan, the torch ginger flower buds will add some extra oomph!
ReplyDeleteYour round brinjal is so gorgeous! Geramnya! I have 3 seedlings left of the red okra, the other 3 was destroyed. Your asam pedas looks good, have not cooked asam pedas for quite a while, you are making me craving for some! Ovecooked brinjals in delicious gravies like this is really good, all the delicious spicy flavours have seeped into the brinjals! Mmmmm.. yummy! Would love to visit this beautiful and bountiful Pasar Tani one day! :)

Robin~ I think your cook will definitely be happy with your many variety leave harvest and stir-fry is fast and delicious too.
Holly~ You must try luffa, this is a vegetable that easily soak flavour when you prepare them. Young luffa is so soft and melting in the mouth.
Daphne~ I would have gladly cook it for you so you know how it taste like ;).
Villager~ I love them too. Not sure how long will it produce for us now. But we do have some frozen one. Last year I tried freezing okra and they still taste as fresh after 6 month.

Milka~LOL. I think you are right, I can see my shadow there. I like the long ones much more. But the round one is more suitable for curry or dish that takes a long time to simmer.

hearts_in_asia~ They taste delicious too. I have never come across of okra seedlings in any of our local nursery.
Cait~ I guess since I grew up with these vegetables, I would not consider them as exotic. But you will be surprise that Rainbow Chard, Silverbeet, Kale, Kohl Rabi I will grow for the first time this fall will be exotic to me;-).
I love the complimentary colours of the okra and eggplant. Nice harvest - looks lovely as a meal too.
